California Governor Gavin Newsom attempted to shame President Donald Trump over the weekend for hosting a Great Gatsby–themed party amid the ongoing government shutdown, despite his history of attending a fancy dinner at the height of the COVID-19 lockdowns.

On Saturday, Newsom posted a photo of Trump at the Mar-a-Lago event on X, writing, “Donald Trump hosted a Great Gatsby party while SNAP benefits were about to disappear for 42 million Americans. He does not give a damn about you.”

Critics quickly reminded Newsom of his own actions during the COVID-19 pandemic, when he attended a dinner party at the upscale French Laundry restaurant in Yountville, California, despite his state being under strict lockdown orders he had imposed. Photos released in 2020 showed Newsom dining indoors without a mask and sitting closely with other guests, including prominent lobbyists, at a birthday celebration.

At the time, millions of Californians were ordered to stay home and isolate, as schools, restaurants, and small businesses were forced to close. Newsom later apologized for the dinner, calling it a “bad mistake.”

Newsom’s criticism of Trump comes as Democratic lawmakers continue to blame Republicans for the ongoing government shutdown, even though Senate Democrats refused to support a clean continuing resolution that would have temporarily funded the government and prevented the shutdown.

As the shutdown drags on, concerns have grown over the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, which provides food benefits to low-income Americans. Federal officials had warned that funding for SNAP could lapse, but a judge recently ruled that the government’s plan to halt benefits starting November 1 was “unlawful.”
