Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi will not be seeking reelection to Congress after decades in Washington, DC. The official announcement comes after prop 50 was passed in California, which will allow for redistricting to take place.

"I will not be seeking reelection to Congress. With a grateful heart, I look forward to my final year of service as your proud representative," Pelosi said in an announcement video.

Leading up to the announcement, there had been reports that the Democrat politician would not be going for another run after the former House Speaker has spent nearly four decades in Congress. In late October, far-left state Senator Scott Wiener had already announced he would be running for Pelosi's seat, hinting that Pelosi would be stepping aside.

Pelosi served as the Speaker of the House under President Joe Biden from 2019-2023 and was also in the role from 2007 to 2011 during Obama's administration. She first ran for Congress in 1987 and is now 85 years old.

In the video announcing her retirement from Congress, she also took credit for "bringing home billions of dollars for" San Francisco's various infrastructure as well as environmental projects. Pelosi did not say why she has decided to retire now, right after prop 50 passed on Tuesday, which will allow California to bypass an independent commission to redraw congressional lines. The move from California is a response to a redraw effort in Texas, where the GOP has been moving to take up more seats in Congress in the 2026 midterms.

However, the redistrict effort could have put Pelosi's seat at risk as well, as the elderly politician has been working in public office for decades.

Aside from Wiener, Democratic challenger Saikat Chakrabarti, a wealthy former tech executive, is also looking to run for Pelosi's seat in Congress. Just days ago, Pelosi appeared on CNN, and called President Donald Trump the "worst thing on the face of the earth" while she was questioned about her potential retirement and the prop 50 vote.
